Mikki Koskinen to lead the European Shipowners

Mikki Koskinen, CEO of ESL Shipping, has been elected President of the European shipowners’ association European Shipowners | ECSA for a two‑year term starting on 1 January 2026.
Koskinen assumes the role at a critical moment for European shipping, marked by geopolitical uncertainty, the urgent need to transition to low‑carbon operations, and a growing shortage of skilled professionals. The European fleet, representing around 35% of the world’s total tonnage, plays a key role in securing supply chains, enabling Europe’s exports, and connecting the continent to the rest of the world.
“Shipping is the foundation of Europe’s security and competitiveness. As we move toward zero‑emission shipping, shipowners are investing in modern vessels and technologies that reduce emissions and ensure reliable supply chains. To make this transition feasible, we need targeted measures to close the cost gap between fossil and green fuels,” Koskinen says.
Koskinen is the first Finn to become President of European Shipowners and represents the Finnish Shipowners’ Association. Founded in 1965, European Shipowners represents 22 member associations and countries across Europe. It serves as the voice of the European shipping industry and promotes regulation that supports competitiveness and sustainability.
“Mikki’s election as President shows that Finland is a maritime nation larger than its size, and that our expertise, constructive cooperation, and way of working are valued across Europe. This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen Finland’s visibility and influence within European shipping!” says Tiina Tuurnala, CEO of the Finnish Shipowners’ Association.
Koskinen has been CEO of ESL Shipping since 2013. He is a board member of the Finnish Shipowners’ Association and served as its chair from 2021 to 2023. He has also represented Finland on the board of the global organisation International Chamber of Shipping.
